Description

It wouldn't be apparent at first when seeing the happy little filly Storybright of how difficult her short life has been.  Her mother was only pregnant with her when the Changelings attacked Canterlot.  By the actions of Princess Cadance and Shining Armor the invasion was thwarted, but not before the damage was done.  As a result Pageturner and Whistlewind, Storybright's mother and father, spent the next four months in the hospital.  When she was finally released, Pageturner had to make the walk home alone.  Left to carry and raise her daughter when her husband had succumbed to his wounds, Pageturner worked hard despite the limp her injuries had left her with.  Despite it all, her neighbors and friends pitched in all the time, helping and supporting the young mother.

Storybright was born to the delight of everypony who had come to wish their congratulations.  The doctors fears had been confirmed though, Pageturner's injuries from a few months past had left their scar.  Storybright was blind, and much like her mother, limps.  She uses a brace to walk, though for a number of years needed to hold onto her mother to make her way around.  But, thanks to a special anonymous donation, she now owns a specially trained Phoenix named Sunspot that perches on her back, acting as her eyes to direct her where to go.  It perches on a special harness she wears, though the exact method it communicates with her is a secret.  She seems to simply know, and in return looks much like a pegasus with a full spread of radiant, fiery wings.  She has only tried gliding with Sunspot so far, but it is possible that true flight may be achievable.

But, Storybright's truest calling is in books.  Her mother is one of the librarians at the Canterlot Royal Library, and would bring books home every week to read them to her daughter.  The young filly couldn't get enough, she loved to listen to the epic tales of wonder all the while imagining them in her own unique way.  It's hard to tell just exactly how her mind envisions the stories having never experienced color or even sight, but she loves to do it all the same.  Every day before her mother would get home Storybright would set out the book and sit in front of it, waiting patiently to hear more of the story.

The day she got her cutie mark was just as special.  She had received the first book she could read herself.  Braille had been a challenge for Storybright, but she never gave up.  Reading on her own for the first time was an excitement she could not contain, and the very next day Storybright took her book to school.  Over a break in classes, the excited filly drew some of her friends together, pulled out her book, and began to read.  She read two whole chapters before it was time to go again, and the moment she stepped inside the schoolhouse her cutie mark appeared.  Now, every day after school, Storybright goes to the library where her mother works and reads to anyone that will listen.

On a decree from Princess Celestia herself, an alcove was built into the children's section where Storybright could sit and read to an audience.  Because of the rare nature of blindness since magic has become so effective at its cure, books in Braille were almost all gone.  But, because her condition cannot be healed with magic, Storybright has worked hard to translate some of her favorite stories into Braille.  Despite barely into her teenaged years, Storybright is now a fully-fledged member of the Librarian's Honor Society, and a pride to her mother.  So, if ever walking along the streets of Canterlot and a young teenaged filly with a Phoenix perched on her back passes by, following along could end in an experience very few can equal.
